Summer Photo Tips

Summertime is full of terrific summery landscapes that make for natural backgrounds.

Now is the time for beachy waves or hair that’s free to blow in the breeze.

Find some commonality in attire.

The girls and I went with blue. With my youngest and I wearing light, washed denim jackets and my eldest a blue and white striped linen shirt. Other than our blonde tresses, the matching stopped there – we went with fave summer attire. I wore a light weight linen dress, in black, that is personal fave and black sling backs.  And I put the littlest miss in an adorable pineapple covered (it’s kind of her thing at the moment!) pink romper and yellow (hand me down) salt water sandals. My eldest’s go to is a messy bun (an ode to her ballet loving ways) for her curls and I didn’t fight her on her choice of flip flops (since we agreed on her shorts and top).

We found a lovely country road, a block from where we were staying, just begging for photos and meandering. And some tall summer grass that suited our needs perfectly. Plenty of shade. Shade is your friend on bright summer’s day, as it will give you relief from harsh shadows on the face.

Remember close and cosy is pretty cute.

If we are talking photos with kids (and we are), the quicker the better. Generally the first 5 minutes capture your best and most authentic smiles. So have a couple poses in mind before hand – either take note on instagram or pinterest, because littles can get irritable and cranky quick. In this regard, I find it best to discuss expectations before hand – i.e. I expect you to smile and not make funny faces – (and then we will do funny face photo as well…) and agree upon what the activity or treat for a successful photo shoot will be. As a general rule, 15 – 20 minutes is all you can realistically expect with out a break.

I was in the need for some mother daughter photos for an article and fortunate enough to have my talented sister in law to help me out with her lovely camera and keen eye for photography!
